My Story My path to Reiki began 6 years ago when I experienced a magnificent massage in Central California. Towards the end of the massage, I noticed that I was no longer being touched by the massage therapist and within minutes my therapist informed me that I had responded well to the energy work. I had no idea what she was talking about. What I did know was that I felt simultaneously relaxed and energized! I skipped away from that session with a light heart, an energized body and a calm mind. I've since discovered the wonder of energy work through Reiki.
What is Reiki?
If I were a poet I might come close to having the words to describe the vast mystery of Reiki. But since I'm not gifted in that way, I can say that Reiki is a spiritual relaxation and stress reduction technique that may promote healing. Reiki has been described as a spiritual healing art that originated in Japan in the early 1900's.
The word Reiki is comprised of two Japanese Kanji characters: "Rei" and "ki." "Rei" is often interpreted as universal life force energy, spiritual consciousness, or God-consciousness. Ki is life energy. If one has ever practiced Tai Chi or Qi Gong, one may be familiar with the feeling of Ki building in the body. When the Kanji characters are combined, the word Reiki can be defined as "spiritually guided life energy."
As Reiki energy is drawn into the body, it brings energetic balance to the individual on a variety of levels - physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. As the body is relaxed and restored to balance, optimum conditions for healing may occur.
A typical session lasts 60 minutes long and begins with the client relaxing on a massage table, fully clothed. The Reiki Practitioner then works above the client within the client's energy field, or with the client's body through light touch. As the Reiki Practitioner places her hands on the client, she holds her hands still while Reiki energy is drawn through her hands by the client. Reiki is a collaborative process between client and practitioner. Clients often report a feeling of balance, relaxation and well-being at the end of the session. Reiki is difficult to describe, or even understand intellectually, because it's not an intellectual experience - it's something one feels with one's heart and soul.
History of Reiki Reiki was founded by Dr. Mikao Usui in the early 1900's during intensive spiritual training on Mt. Kurama in Japan. After his spiritual experience on the mountain it is said that Usui Sensei moved to Tokyo to open a healing society and Reiki clinic. He treated many people and also initiated sixteen teachers into his system of healing. One of these venerable teachers was Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, who was a retired doctor. Dr. Hayashi also opened a Reiki school and clinic in Tokoyo and wrote a healing manual for other practitioners. The third prominent person in the Western understanding of the history of Reiki is Mrs. Hawayo Takata. Mrs. Takata lived in Hawaii and was the daughter of Japanese immigrants to the island. As an adult she developed serious abdominal pain and flew to Japan to seek treatment in Dr. Hayashi's Reiki clinic. The experience at the clinic impacted her so profoundly that she sought Reiki training from Dr. Hayashi. Eventually Dr. Hayashi traveled to Hawaii to help Mrs. Takata set up a Reiki clinic in the West, the first that we know of outside of Japan at that time. The expansion of Reiki to the West is credited to Dr. Hayashi and Mrs. Takata.
My Education It has taken several years to acquire my training, but I have now been certified in all 3 degrees of Usui Reiki Ryoho by core faculty person and Reiki Master, Jessica Miller, of the International Center for Reiki Training. (www.Reiki.org and www.ReikiMastery.com )
I have sought additional training, and first and second degree certification, with Santa Barbara Reiki Master, Lillian Kurosaka. (www.sbwellnessdirectory.com/kurosaka)
I also had the great privilege of training with Kathleen Prasaad (www.animalreikisource.com) and received certification in Animal Reiki, Level I and Level II. I intend to pursue Animal Reiki Level III in the future.
For those who are interested in hearing and feeling the sound of the drum during their session, I am also certified as a Reiki Drumming Practitioner.
And I still want to learn more! I strive to continue my education, as I am passionate about this spiritual healing modality. I am also committed to my spiritual development, and to deepening my relationship with Reiki. Consequently, I practice Reiki treatments, precepts, and meditations daily.
An Invitation At a time when our culture seems to be moving at the speed of light, I invite you to take time for yourself by slowing down and joining me in the subtle nurturing energy of Reiki. I would be honored to treat you, your pets, your plants, your orchards etc. Let's talk about your needs and I will do my best to accommodate. I can be reached at (805) 259-5953 or via email at SeasideReiki@hotmail.com
Please note that Reiki is not medical treatment and I am not a medical doctor, however, Reiki can be a valuable compliment to the medical treatment that you or your pet are already receiving.
