I am a licensed clinical psychologist (PSY 20964) and my orientation is integrative. I embrance a multicultural perspective in my work. For over twenty years, I have been actively involved in healing arts and consciousness endeavors. I have conducted workshops and presented internationally on topics related to augmenting emotional, physical, social and spiritual well-being. Quite a while ago I was inspired by the field of psychoneuroimmunology and the implications for integrative approaches to psychology and healthcare. I became certified in hypnotherapy at that time and I focused on stress reduction through the use of imagery and relaxation techniques within a CBT framework. I had an early introduction to what are now considered evidence-based treatments. I later became certified in interactive guided imagery under doctors David Bresler and Martin Rossman (www.thehealingmind.org).
Through the years, I have been mentored in Gestalt psychology and group facilitation and I was mentored pre and post-doctorally by Jungian analysts at the C.G. Jung Institute of Los Angeles ( www.junginla.org). I have worked with brain injured individuals and in psychiatric inpatient settings as well as in community counseling environments and private practice. I am commited to respecting that while human beings share many commonalities, each individual is unique in temperment, behavior, inner reflection and socio-cultural background. I embrace the ethical and legal guidelines of my profession and I respect the many ways of knowing in a diverse social system; the rational, empirical, and intuitive. I am a founding member and current board member of the Tierra Sagrada, Sacred Earth Foundation (www.sacredearthfound.org) and I am an advisory board member for the Santa Barbara Restorative Justice Neighborhood Initiative. I am currently president-elect for Imagery International as well (www.imagryinternational.com). I am active in the Santa Barbara County Psychological Association as the Chair of the Student Outreach Committee and I regularly attend the meetings and conferences for the National Council for Schools for Professional Psychology as a representative of AUSB.
My participation in meditative practices informs my work in the world both personally and professionally. I was initialy introduced to vipassana meditation by Marv Treiger in the early 1990's ( www.ladharma.org) and I have continued to participate in mindfulness practices. The practice of metta, or lovingkindness meditation (www.sharonsalzberg.com) has had a particularly important impact on my life and on my own process of forgiveness, as has working with imagery, dreams, indigenous modalities, and sacred ceremony. I also have a deep regard for ecopsychological principles, the concept of the collective and ecological unconscious, and creative expression. I work from the perspective of interpersonal neurobiology, as I have been following Dan Seigel's work since The Developing Mind came out (www.mindsightinstitute.com). My work with forgiveness is informed by the work of the Stanford Forgiveness Project and Luskin's approach (www.forgiveforgood.com).
Integrative models of healing are systemic approaches that address body, mind, spirit, and the social aspect of our being. They combine insights and practices from both Eastern and Western philosophical and psychological foundations and include, but are not limited to empirically validated treatments. An integrative model of living supports knowing the appropriate times for going inward into quiet stillness or contemplation and when to focus on external actions that ground intentions in a tangible way in the world. The overall mission of this type of approach involves a commitment to practices that build our capacity to know ourselves deeply and to relate to others authentically from a place of curiosity and compassion. Mindfulness practice is encouraged and human suffering is explored contextually and collaboratively. Diversity is honored. Acceptance and forgiveness are gifts that emerge from integrative practices.
I use a variety of techniques in therapy, with the intention of exploring what will work best for you. These techniques are likely to include dialogue, interpretation, relaxation training, cognitive reframing, awareness exercises, self-monitoring experiments, visualization and imagery, journal keeping, drawing, working with dream material and reading books. I may suggest that you consult with a physical health care provider regarding some other treatments that could assist you and I refer to both traditional and non-traditional (homeopathic and Oriental medicine) practitioners. In addition, I honor the healing systems that you may embrace from your own diverse heritage and spiritual orientation.
My background and training in various psychological modalities enables me to approach each unique client in regard to their particular needs. I deliberately keep my psychotherapy practice small in order to give the utmost of my presence while providing therapy to my clients here at Seaside Therapy Center. I see mostly adult clients on Mondays and Saturdays.
I am supervising a psychological assistant, Katherine Burrelsman, Psy.D. Katherine is already a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. However, she will be working at Seaside Therapy Center as a registered psych assistant while completing her post doctoral requirements for licensure as a clinical psychologist (PSB34527). Please see Katherine's page for more details.
I spend most of my days as a full time core faculty member and the Director of Practicum Training for Antioch University Santa Barbara's ( www.antiochsb.edu) doctoral program in clinical psychology (Psy.D.).
I regularly attend conferences and CE courses. Some of the areas of study are Trauma, Neurobiology and Addiction, Eating Disorders, Sexual Addiction, Couples Therapy, Self-Injury, Multicultural Psychology, International Psychology, Imagery, Forgiveness, Legal and Ethical, Psychodrama, Buddhist Psychology, Jungian Psychology, Humanistic Psychology, Cognitive Behavioral Psychology, Brief Psychodynamic Psychology, Clinical Supervision, Evidence-Based Psychotherapy Practices, Child Psychology, Transpersonal Psychology, Mindfulness and Psychotherapy, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy, among others.
