Cheryll Ann Smith, Ph.D.
Neuropsychology

Dr. Smith is a licensed psychologist in the state of California. She received her doctorate in physiological psychology and neuroanatomy at UCLA in 1985. Dr. Smith completed a one year post doctoral fellowship in neuropharmacolgy at the Brain Research Institute at UCLA in 1986, and completed a three year post doctoral fellowship at the Neuropsychiatric Institute at UCLA in 1989.

As a Clinical Neuropsychologist in private practice in Santa Barbara, Dr. Smith has focused primarily on the assessment, diagnosis and recommended treatment for individuals with neurological injuries. Although her primary focus has been on traumatic brain injury, with emphasis on forensics, the population she has dealt with over the last fifteen years includes victims of stroke, cancer, immune system disorders, multiple sclerosis and other degenerative disorders of the nervous system such as Parkinson’s disease and dementia. In addition she has assessed and treated cognitive dysfunction and psychological sequelae to stress related disorders, exposure to carbon monoxide, pesticides, toxic molds and mycobacterium.

 Dr. Smith has extensive experience working with children with developmental and acquired neurological disorders. She has participated in Independent Educational Programs (IEP’s) at many of the schools in the Central Coast Area.

 

Dr. Smith was a Neuropsychologist at the Rehabiltation Institute at Santa Barbara, Chief Psychologist at St. John’s Hospital in Oxnard, and she was the Leader of the Developmental and Cognitive Abilities Team at Atascadero State Hospital.

 

Dr. Smith has extensive teaching experience in the areas of abnormal psychology, developmental psychology, psychopharmacology, assessment, and brain and behavior related courses. Dr. Smith has taught at UCLA, Pepperdine University, Westmont College, Pacifica Graduate Institute, and is currently a core faculty member of the PsyD program at Antioch University Santa Barbara.

 

Dr. Smith has multiple publications in peer review journals in the area of brain function and is a member of APA, INS, NAN and is a Board Member in Forensic Psychology.
